Do you ever sit at home wondering, “what’s (s)he got that I don’t?”

It can make you crazy – but why is it that some people are just able to skyrocket into success while it sometimes feels like you’re spinning round and round on the hamster wheel? Some days might be better than others, but if you haven’t achieved the kind of success you want, it can be enough to run and hide.

So, what’s the secret? Why do some people succeed, while others simply sit on the side lines waiting for someday?

It takes more than dumb luck to be a success.

Sure, there’s the occasional business owner who comes up with a genius idea and it just takes off, but for most – success comes after long hours, mountains of doubt and piles of mistakes.

If you’ve been in business for even a minute, you already know that the best products and services don’t always win. In fact, there have been a ton of products and services throughout history that have lost out to a lesser product or service.

So, clearly being the best, isn’t the answer. What is it then? What is it that makes the difference between building a business that takes off and one that falls short?

Turns out there are a few things that successful people understand that help them win and grow big. If you can master even a few of these, I promise you’ll boost your prospects of getting where you want to go in your biz!

Success Secret #1: Have A Clear Message

Now, this one shouldn’t be a surprise – I’m a branding copywriter so OF COURSE I’m going to say that. But, seriously – it’s true.

Successful businesses understand exactly how to articulate their client’s problems and how they solve them.

Turns out catchy tag lines and cute messages aren’t the way to go. When it comes down to sexy copy versus clear content that tells your audience exactly what you do, clear content wins every single time.

Even if it might be tempting to have something that sounds fun – unless you’re able to tell people what you do, how you do it and what’s in it for them, you’re not going to be as successful as you want.

When you can share what you do in a few clear sentences, you can grab attention. Articulate the steps people need to take to do business with you and don’t assume people know. Let them know what it is that you want them to do and your business will grow.

Success Secret #2: You Need A Good Attitude

They say running your own business isn’t for the faint of heart. And it isn’t.

Successful business owners have a good attitude. That doesn’t mean that they ignore when things aren’t going well – rather, they tend to be resilient, tenacious and have a deeply imbedded belief that they will succeed.

Inevitably, your business is going to offer you some challenges. The difference between success and failure is pretty simple – if you’re able to use dust off the challenges, get back and learn the lessons, your chances of success increase.

Successful people simply believe that they will achieve their goals.

No matter what comes their way, failure is simply not an option for those who make it. This doesn’t mean that you don’t get scared or even have a few sleepless nights, it simply means that you develop a belief that runs so deep that you know that even if it’s not tomorrow – success is still on your horizon.

Success Secret #3: Tolerate Uncertainty and Take Risks

This can be tough if you have a family to support and people who rely on you. But, if you can’t handle uncertainty and don’t like risks, I hate to tell you – maybe being an entrepreneur isn’t for you.

Most successful entrepreneurs are ok with the fact that they don’t know what tomorrow brings. In some senses, successful people actually find that exciting because in that uncertainty lies unending possibility.

You have to be willing to risk a little so that you can grow and learn. Risking things does come with mistakes, but like we said before – half of dealing with the ups and downs comes down to having the right attitude.

If your business has been on cruise control for a while and you’re not growing like you want, maybe it’s time to ask – how willing am I to take some risks to get to the next level?

Success Secret #4: Be Uniquely You.

You keep an eye on your competition because you want to know what they’re doing, but the day you decide to copy them is the day your business loses. People want to do business with people who are genuine, that they trust and who are authentic!

People can sniff out a copycat. Instead of copying the competition, successful people know how to put their own stamp on what’s going on in the market. Sure, there are thousands and thousands of brand strategists – but there’s no one doing it my way. Unless you own your own genius in whatever you do, no one will want to do business with you.

When you’re uniquely you, it shows.

Let’s face the facts – I might admire people like Marie Forleo, Jenna Kutcher or Amy Porterfield, but if try to be like them – forget it.

When I share with clients the best practices to reach their audience, I make sure it’s something they can do – something that feels natural to them because if there’s any discomfort, any fakeness, anything awkward, the audience will click away.

Success Secret #5 – Foster Your Creativity

This might not be the first quality you think about when you think of successful people, but it’s true: successful people are. Creativity brought us the iPhone. Creativity brought us Tesla. Heck, creativity brought us the light bulb.

Better services and innovation come out of creativity. If you take the time to foster it, you’ll likely discover better ways to serve your audience and grow your business. Now, I’m not saying that you have to paint every day or pick up pottery, but anything that you can do to honor that part of yourself that can expand upon your vision daily, then do it.

Creativity makes you better at what you do.

So, if you’re buried in the daily grind of your business, it’s time to come up and look at what’s really going on around you. Let yourself see all the different ways you can be of use to your audience and write them down – you never know what stroke of genius you might stumble upon.

Success is not a one size fits all.

In the end, there is no one size fits all when it comes to success. No one secret will help you get to the top. Instead, being able to apply them all in some fashion will allow you to weather some of the storms of entrepreneurship.

Even the people who seem like they are an overnight success all embody some of these qualities – if they don’t, they don’t stay on top for very long.
